Thioglycolic Acid 99% acts as a restructuring and depilatory agent. The reducing properties of the SH-group open the sulfur bridges in the keratin structure of the hair and thus weaken it. After rinsing, the sulfur bridges are reconnected with an oxidizing chemical such as hydrogen-peroxide. If both steps are applied to hair tightly wrapped around hair rollers the hair fibers get its desired curled shape. Thioglycolic Acid 99%, cosmetic grade is used in production of permanent wave and depilatory formulations.
